高校３年生の現代文の演習で、文芸評論家の柄谷行人の文章を読みます。そこでは、２つの文芸書を取り上げながら、宗教と倫理の違いを浮かび上がらせ、行人氏は「倫理とは何か」を言おうとしています。先日は、医学部志望の生徒にこの文章を読んでもらいました。医師は、宗教観よりも倫理観の方が大切です。医師に限らずとも、この国において、職業においては倫理観がより重んじられます。どの職業についても問われるのは倫理観です。

わたしが数年前までコマを持っていたのも、大阪大学工学部の「工学倫理」という講座でした。将来的に社会インフラ（主に道路や鉄道、航空）に土木技術者（civil engineer）として携わるであろう学生に対して、工学倫理とはどのような意味を持つのか。例えば、道路における一般の利用者は構造計算も制御理論も分かりません。つまり、技術者は本質的に強い立場（power）に立っています。利用者は、見えないところで下された技術者の判断を信用するしかなく、誤魔化しが表面化しにくい。だからこそ、技術者自身の倫理が社会の安全を左右します。また、自動運転やAIによる運行管理など、技術が進めば進むほど、倫理的判断能力がcivil engineerの差になってきます。倫理は、職業人の土台です。

わたしは、この医学部志望の生徒が医師になったとき、倫理観の確かな医師であって欲しいと願います。そしてその確かさを保証する一つとして、倫理観と宗教観がどのように違うのかを理解しておくことは、とても大切なことのように思われます。

現代文は、「テストのために」ではなく「自分の価値観や常識を更新するため」の最上の手段の一つだと言えます。文芸書は、物語を通して、一つの概念を描いています。その概念を獲得する営みが、国語の本質です。概念という抽象を、物語という具体を通して獲得できるのが国語です。評論は言わずもがな。そして、獲得した概念を、ぜひ実生活における自分の人生に応用して欲しいのです。そこに生き方やあり方の更新があります。そこまでできて初めて、OSアカデミアが目指す学習なのです。

Building Yourself Through Learning

In my senior high school modern-literature class, students read an essay by the literary critic Karatani Kōjin. In that piece, he compares two works of literature to show the difference between religion and ethics, and tries to answer one question: “What is ethics?”

The other day, I asked a student who hopes to enter medical school to read this essay. For future doctors, an ethical sense is far more important than a religious outlook. In fact, in Japan, no matter what job you take, ethics is what people look for. Ethical judgment is expected in every profession.

A few years ago, I taught a course called Engineering Ethics at Osaka University. The class was for future civil engineers who will someday work on social infrastructure—roads, railways, airports, and more. For them, engineering ethics is not something abstract. It has a direct meaning.

For example, ordinary users of a road know nothing about structural calculations or control theory. This means engineers hold real power. People have no choice but to trust the invisible decisions engineers make. Mistakes or dishonest shortcuts often stay hidden. That is exactly why the engineer’s own ethics determine the safety of society. And as technologies such as self-driving systems and AI-based traffic control advance, the ability to make ethical judgments becomes an even clearer difference between engineers. Ethics is the foundation of any professional.

So when this student eventually becomes a doctor, I truly hope they will be a person with a solid ethical compass. And understanding the difference between ethics and religion will help support that foundation.

Modern-literature study is not “for the test.” It is one of the best ways to renew your values and assumptions. Literary works use stories to express a single concept. Learning that concept through the concrete form of a story is the heart of Japanese language education. Essays and critiques do the same in a more direct way.

And I want students to take the concepts they gain and apply them to their actual lives. That is where one’s way of living is updated. Only when learning reaches that level does it become the kind of learning OS Academia aims for.
