今回は、良美さんから、OSアカデミアの本質、「分かる＝腑に落ちる」学びというテーマで書こうと言われ、わたしは現代文の受講生を振り返ってみます。現代文で腑に落ちるというのは２つの歯車がかみ合った状態だと言えます。一つは読み方、そしてもう一つは内容理解。つまり「現代」について体系的にとらえることができたとき。どちらかというと、内容理解の方に、現代文を自分のものにする手がかりが多いように感じています。昨日は、中村雄二郎氏の文章で、時間の効率化、計数化、一義的な見方をキーワードとする文章を扱いました。「時は金なり」ということわざにもあるように、現代人は時間をお金に置き換えて換算するようになってしまった。君たちが大学に入ってやるであろうアルバイトも時給いくらという、時間をお金に置き換えてその価値をはかってるよね、というような話をすると、生徒の目が開いてきます。

この文章の趣旨は、現代社会では、時間を「効率」や「お金」に換算して一義的に捉える傾向が強まっているが、本来の時間はそれだけでは捉えきれない、多義的で質的な側面をもつものだ。計数化・効率化によって、私たちは時間の豊かさや意味を見失っているという内容です。現代文とは、私たちが生きているこの時代に関する問題点を指摘した文章のことで、ゆえに、興味を持つ生徒は、「いま、ここ」を感じることのできる格好の材料です。同様に、OSアカデミアでは文明、文化、文芸、言語などの観点から現代を描かれた文章を正しく読み取ることを通して、現代を体系的に理解していくようになります。すると、試験などでどんな文章が出されても、書かれていることは現代なわけですから、容易に理解ができるようになります。正しい読み方は、おのずとついてきます。評論文の大問で満点を取る生徒は、このように育っていると理解しています。

これは、私自身の経験でもあるので、経験に基づいた指導として、この指導に合った生徒は満点を取ってきました。もちろん、そうではない生徒もいます。一人ひとり引っ掛かるところが違うはずで、その異なる感覚にいかに寄り添っていくかが、これからの課題です。これからの観点として、さらにわたしが感じている仮説の一つに、「いま、ここ」を生きている人ほど、目の前の文章を客観的に読み取れるのではないかということがあります。自分の主観たっぷりに読むとは、その人の生きている過去や未来に引っ張られながら、ある種のバイアスをかけながら読むことで、故に正確性を欠くのではないかと想像しています。学習を腑に落とすとは、総じて、「いま、ここ」を生きている精神状態であることが前提だろうと思います。そして、その状態になって初めて、学びの意味がわかり、人は動き出すのだと言えます。生徒一人ひとりがそのような状態になるように、塾のできる範囲で寄り添い、目を輝かせながら現代文を楽しめるように支援してまいります。

“Understanding” Means It Really Clicks

This time, Yoshimi suggested that we write about the core idea of OS Academia: learning where “understanding” really clicks.
So I looked back on my students in modern Japanese reading classes.

When something really clicks in modern literature, I think it’s when two gears fit together.
One is how you read, and the other is what you understand.
In other words, it’s when you can see “modern society” as a whole.

From my experience, students often find more clues on the content side. That’s where modern literature starts to feel like their own.

Yesterday, we worked on a text by Yujiro Nakamura. It talked about keywords like efficiency, quantification, and seeing things in only one fixed way.
I explained it like this:

“You know the saying ‘Time is money,’ right?
In modern society, we’ve started to treat time as money.
When you go to university and work part-time, you’re paid by the hour. You’re literally turning time into money.”

When I say that, I can see students’ eyes open. Something starts to click.

The main idea of the text is this:
In modern society, we tend to see time only in terms of efficiency and money.
But time isn’t just that. It has many meanings and qualities.
By turning everything into numbers and efficiency, we’ve lost the richness and depth of time itself.

Modern literature points out problems in the society we’re living in right now.
That’s why, for students who are curious, it’s a perfect way to feel “here and now.”

At OS Academia, we read texts that describe modern society from different angles—civilization, culture, art, and language.
By reading them carefully, students start to understand the modern world in a structured way.

Once that happens, it doesn’t really matter what kind of text appears on an exam.
No matter the topic, it’s still about modern society.
So understanding becomes much easier, and the correct reading skills naturally follow.

Students who get full marks on essay questions grow in exactly this way.

This approach comes from my own experience, and students who fit this style of learning have actually scored full marks.
Of course, not every student does. Everyone gets stuck in different places.
Our challenge from here is how closely we can stay with each student’s unique way of feeling and thinking.

One hypothesis I’ve been thinking about is this:
People who truly live in the “here and now” may be able to read texts more objectively.

When we read with too much personal emotion, we’re often pulled by our past or our worries about the future.
That adds bias, and accuracy suffers.

For learning to really sink in, I believe a calm “here and now” state of mind is essential.
Only from that place does learning start to make sense—and only then do people naturally begin to move forward.

At our school, we’ll continue to support students as best we can,
so that each of them can reach that state,
and enjoy modern literature with bright, curious eyes.
